What is a CRM?

A CRM (Customer Relationship Management system) is where enquiries, conversations and customer history are recorded in one place, with the sales process split into stages so that every enquiry has a status and an owner.

Why it matters

While enquiries live in personal inboxes and messaging apps, no marketing measurement can be complete: you cannot tell which campaign produced revenue, and a forgotten enquiry belongs to no one. For a company operating across several countries the CRM is also the only place where markets become comparable — enquiries arriving in different languages, through different channels and in different time zones only add up if they land in the same list with the same fields.

How it works and how it is measured

  • Source field: every record carries the campaign, channel and landing page it came from; ROAS and cost per lead are calculated from this field.
  • Stages: new → contacted → qualified → proposal → won or lost. Keep the list short and make sure everyone reads each stage the same way.
  • Channel integration: web forms, calls and messaging apps feed into the CRM; a channel that is not connected is also a channel that is never measured.
  • Owner and next step: each record has one responsible person and a defined next action, with a date.
  • Loss reasons: record why deals are lost — price, timing, scope, market fit — because this is the cheapest feedback available for correcting the marketing message.
  • Cross-border fields: store country, preferred language and time zone on the record so follow-up happens in the right language and at a reasonable hour.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a CRM before entering a new market?

It helps, because the first months are when you learn which channels and which segments actually respond. Without a record of source and outcome, that learning is lost and the second year of budget is set on impressions rather than evidence.

We installed a CRM and nobody uses it. Why?

Usually because it asks the sales team for work and gives nothing back: too many mandatory fields, no connection to the channels they actually work in, and reports nobody reads. The fix is rarely a different product — it is fewer fields and connected channels.

How does a CRM change marketing measurement?

It moves the measure from enquiry counts to revenue. When the source field and the value of won deals sit on the same record, campaigns that generate enquiries can be told apart from campaigns that generate business.
